Greenway Memory 10 Miler

On Saturday Mathis and I drove into Roanoke for the Greenway Memory Miler.  It was a ten mile race, and neither one of us was feeling that great about it.  My running has been so sporadic since starting my internship in the schools, and I haven't been running as much as I'd like.  Here I am smiling at Mathis, yet giving a thumbs down for my lack of training.

I was so tempted to pick up the race shirt and head out to IHOP for pancakes instead of running for the next two hours.  I was tired, cold and not very motivated to run.  But thankfully Mathis encouraged me to get my butt out there -- it was a cold start (in the 30s) but it warmed up as we started running.  The first few miles are ALWAYS the toughest for me -- after mile 3 I had to stop and walk.  My legs were already hurting some, and I couldn't find my groove.  I was battling the mental part of knowing I still had 7 miles to go.  But again, Mathis stuck by my side.  We walked some and then kept running.

By the half-way point I knew that I could finish.  I was starting to find my running groove, and the miles went by much faster.  We still walked from time to time, but overall I was making it.  Mathis' legs hurt pretty bad from the lack of training, but we pushed through.  It totally amazes me how your body can adapt when you run -- of course when you don't run, your body looses some of that adaptation.  But I feel that overall I have a much stronger base for running then when I began.  I started running exactly three years ago, and I've run 5 half-marathons and one full marathon in that time.  This year alone I've gotten to run through the Magic Kingdomalongside the Golden Gate Bridge, and next to the Atlantic Ocean.  I wish I was running more often right now, but I'm still proud to call myself a runner.  I want to commit to running throughout my entire life, and I just know there are more 26.2 races in my future! :)

We finished the race in 1 hour and 50 minutes, which is an 11 minute pace.  Not my fastest, but not my slowest either.  I'm really just proud to have finished.  After the race we headed over to Starbucks where I treated myself to my second PSL of the season.  I definitely kept thinking about coffee during the race, and it was a great reward.

We didn't stick around after the race, but apparently Mathis won an award -- we had no clue since we were some of the last to finish.  I guess it was a small race, and he must have placed in his age division.  Too funny! ;)

It Was Hot

It was hot.  There's not much else to say about my long run this morning.  I got a late start to the run (9:15am) and it was HOT!  Mathis and I pushed on, but have I mentioned that it was really hot?  Because it was hot.  And now I'm sitting in the cool air conditioning drinking chocolate milk. :)

Happy Fourth of July!!!!

Long Run: Check!

My day tomorrow is pretty packed, and so I decided it'd be best to do my long run today.  I waited until Mathis got off work for us to run together on the Huckleberry.  The weather was a little warm -- still in the 60s so I can't complain too much! :)

Today I got to run with my new Garmin Forerunner 305!!!! :)  It arrived on Wednesday, and this was my first run with it.  I LOVE IT.  It works so well, and I can hook it up to my computer which is something I never did before.  I also ran with compression socks and my new bicband today -- both made the run great!  I will wear both next week for my half-marathon, and I wanted to do a trial run with them today.

I really tried to push the pace today.  I am hoping to PR next week, and I feel that I'm at the point where I should be working on my speed a bit.  It was tough, but I'm pleased with today's run!  Having Mathis with me really helped.  I carried water with me, but still got pretty thirsty towards the end.  I'll do a few more runs before Saturday, but I'm getting very excited about the Capital City Half-Marathon!

Tonight I'm stretching my legs and enjoying a night on the couch watching my Spurs.  We're going to open up a bottle of Virginia wine and just relax........ :)

Have a great weekend!

Today's Run Sponsored By the Letter 'A'

I had the BEST run today!  I was dreading it a little bit for some reason... worried about getting too bored or tired.  The weather didn't look like it was going to warm up too much so I decided to sleep in.  I took my time waking up this morning and made a new playlist on my Apple shuffle.

I headed out around 11:30, and I could immediately tell how AMAZING my new shoes felt.  I truly felt like a whole new runner.  I had no idea how beat up my last pair was until I started my long run in my new pair.  My feet didn't hurt when running the hills like they had so much on Sunday.  And the music really kept me entertained.  Thank you Asics and Apple for sponsoring today's run! ;)

I'm getting excited to see that my speed is starting to improve... not sure where this is coming from, but I love it!  Today I kept a strong pace despite MANY hills.  I'm really hoping I can do well next weekend at the Blue Ridge Half-Marathon.  Sooooooo excited about this race!

All Set for Shamrock

This morning I met up with Hannah and Wendy again for some Saturday GYRO action.  Wendy did close to 4.5 miles with us, and Hannah and I did a little over 10 miles.  The weather was beautiful... a little windy, but a gorgeous day.

Hannah and I are all set for the Shamrock Half-Marathon next week!  I am getting pretty excited about running the half distance at such a fun race.

Seven Hundred and Five

Yesterday I ran my last long run of the year
which put my 2010 mileage at 705 miles.

And 705 miles is EXACTLY how far we'll drive to get to our hotel in Orlando next week!
Coincidence?
I think it's a pretty AWESOME sign.
I had more miles planned for 2010, but I'm proud of what I accomplished.
I definitely ran about 650 more miles in 2010 than in 2009. :)
And who knows what 2011 will hold!
Right now my goals are to run 2 marathons, and 3 half-marathons.
I am currently signed up for 2 marathons and 1 half.
I plan on running the Star City Half again in November,
which means I need to find one more half for the year.

I know that my mileage will probably decrease once I start my job in the Fall,
and I'm okay with that.
As long as I keep up with my running in some way
I'll be more than happy.

Here's to a new year of running!!!

10 with Water

Mathis and I realized after our long runs last weekend that the time had come to invest in these...

For awhile I have been running with my handheld Nathan water bottle and sometimes I drop it along the way.  But the time has come when we both need the convenience of having water on us at all times.  And the belt is much more convenient than the handheld.  Earlier this week we each ordered a Nathan water belt from Amazon.com, and today was my first day to run with the belt.

Overall I really like the belt.  Here I am getting ready to head out the door today...

It took me awhile to find out where I liked having the belt.  I lowered it a bit after I set out the door, and I found that if it was lower and snug it didn't bounce as much.  The belt has a great pocket for me to carry my Orange GU and my BlackBerry.

Today's run was really good.  I ran the hills so my pace was a bit slower, but still right where I wanted it to be.  It was cold today (39 degrees), but the sun was out so it didn't feel so bad.  My clothes and earwarmers kept me feeling warm.  It was nice to have the mileage drop back a bit this week.  I'm thankful that Hal does this in his training program!  Next weekend is 15 miles, and I'm thinking I may try my first ice bath after the run!  Any suggestions on icing?!?!

Getting Back on Track

The last few weeks have been difficult for my training.  Getting sick really tanked my running, and I'm just now starting to feel 100% better.  Today I headed out with Mathis to get a long run in of 10 miles.  I was somewhat nervous about this distance, because 9 was difficult a few weeks ago, and I haven't logged anything over 3 in the last week.

Sarah met up with us at the Huckleberry Trail, and it was a beautiful Fall day --- slightly warm, but beautiful.  Sarah had originally planned on only running the first few miles, but I talked her into running the whole 10 with me. :)  What can I say?  We had lots to talk about since we hadn't seen run together in awhile.

We ran into Blacksburg for water which added about an additional mile onto our route.  We still stopped once we hit 10 miles, and walked another mile to the end.  This was a good thing, because our legs were killing us.  I definitely think that last mile of walking helped stretch them out.

Mathis got me some chocolate milk to drink at the finish, and it tasted great.  I am so happy to be back on track with training.  It is tough, but it feels so great at the same time!

10

This morning I met up with the lovely Sarah for my last long run before the half next weekend.  I was soooo happy to run with Sarah this morning, because she always motivates me to keep going.  And talking along the way makes the time fly by! :)  Sarah is starting to train for her second marathon this Fall.

It was a little chilly and windy this morning, but overall a really great run.  We stopped half-way to stretch and fuel, but ran the rest of the time.  We finished with a great time, and I felt pretty strong today.  I'm so grateful that I can run with Sarah.  Although I like running by myself at times, I really enjoy her company, and I'm not as tempted to stop and walk when we're together.

After I got back from my run, some sweet friends brought over donuts.  Mathis was getting the oil changed in my car, so I went up to the tire shop, and I chowed down on the donuts... I was so hungry, and they tasted amazing!!!

I'm excited to taper this next week before completing my first half half one week from today!!!!!

Make Up Run

This past week has been a little difficult.  When Mathis separated his shoulder Sunday afternoon, our entire Spring Break plans were turned upside down.  And ever since my racing experience last Saturday I haven't felt like running.  I tried to get in 5 miles on Wednesday, but nothing clicked.  It was tough just making it to 3 miles.  I was mad at running and mad at myself.

Today I planned to do my last long run before the Shamrock Half-Marathon next weekend (the half came up so fast!!!).  We're supposed to get some rain over the weekend, and I thought it'd be best to get my long run out of the way.

I worked hard to prepare myself mentally for today's run.  I reminded myself of these things:

  • To run for me and no one else!
  • That I am completely capable of running this mileage
  • Timing doesn't matter, and I'm running to finish strong
  • The Lord made me to run the way I do, and He loves me as I am
  • Just a few months ago it was tough for me to run 1.5 miles
This first few miles today were a little rough.  At mile 2 I dropped my water bottle and jacket so I could grab them on the way back at mile 8.  Half-way into mile 4 I found my high, and all felt right again with the running world.  It felt like I was truly making up with running -- that our stupid fight was over, and I was reminded about all the reasons I began this journey.  Things began to click, and the miles ticked away.  At mile 8 I stopped for water and GU (I tried Tri-Berry today, but I think I like Strawberry Banana better).

It was misting rain throughout my run today, but it felt pretty nice.  And I wore my new shorts that I won from the Happy Runner!  The shorts arrived earlier in the week, and today was the perfect day to break them in.  I love them!!!!  I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing these shorts at my half next weekend.

My time was the same from last week, although I'll admit that today I stopped the watch at mile 8 for awhile to refuel.  I'll continue to run this next week although I won't do anything over 4 miles.  I'm really excited/nervous about next weekend, and I'll definitely be preparing myself for this race over the next week! :)

Have a great weekend!!!

Blacksburg Classic Ten Miler

Yesterday was the highly anticipated Blacksburg Classic 10 Mile race!  The race wasn't until 1:00 pm so that the day could get a little warmer.  Definitely opposite from the Texas races where everything is scheduled early to avoid the heat. :) Mathis and I both slept in with hopes of getting some rest -- I haven't been sleeping well due to my cold, and Mathis has been up late working every night.

I definitely felt better, but woke up sneezing and coughing a lot.  I actually packed tissues to bring with me during the race.  Not an ideal situation by any means, but we gathered up all our stuff and headed out!

I didn't think that I had too many expectations for this race.  I signed up for it because I knew it'd help me with our half-marathon in a few weeks.  The half-marathon has been my ultimate goal for right now, and this race just fit our training schedule.  Plus it was cheap and close by!  I knew it would be a small race, but I just didn't realize how small.  It's hard to say how many runners there were.  There was also a 5K going on at the same time, but Mathis thinks there was close to 300?  I have no idea, and they haven't posted the results yet so I'm still clueless.  Keep reading to see why the race size became such an issue.

We got to the packet pickup, and I met up with my friends Sarah and Ashley.  Mathis and I got our race bibs, and some very cool long-sleeve t-shirts!  We went outside and got behind the line.  I felt good -- the sun was shining, and the temps were nice (high 40s).  Regrettably I didn't take too many pictures of the race -- I'll definitely be running with my phone again next time!

The race started, and everyone took off.  I knew that I wouldn't run the race the entire race with my friends, but I was disappointed when we split up before the first mile marker.  Because of my cold, I was worried I wouldn't have the endurance for the entire race, so I knew I couldn't start too fast.  I wanted to go slow in order to finish.  But I didn't realize just how slow I'd be.  For most of the entire race, I was in LAST PLACE!!  Ok, let's talk speed a little bit.  Most would say that an average pace is 10 minute miles.  I've always been more of an 11 minute girl, but even running at a 12 minute pace is perfectly acceptable.  Not fast by any means, but not all that rare either.

It didn't take long (mile 2-3) before I couldn't even SEE any other runners!  Seriously?!????!!!!  I was so upset!  I hate to admit that I took on a very sour attitude, and I was mad for a lot of the miles.  Mad and somewhat embarrassed.  Running has become so important to me, and I end up in dead last?  I felt like I looked like the most experienced loser.  I had the Garmin on, I was carrying my running belt and at Mile 8 I even took my first GU.  Yet I couldn't keep up with anyone else?!?!?!

I felt humiliated when I ran through the water stations alone.  I just couldn't believe there was no else out there at my pace.  I have to admit that when I crossed the place in the race where the 5K split from the 10 miler, I had serious thoughts about stopping at the 5K.

But I pressed on, and eventually at the turn around part I saw all the other runners.  Some of the fast runners looked at me and said, "Good job!".  I knew they were genuine, and I deeply appreciated this.  But my pride was still hurt.  And let's talk a little about running, shall we?  10 miles is a long distance.  I didn't bring my iPod, because I thought I'd run most of the race with my friends, and we never listen to music.  I got pretty lonely during those miles, and I had a tough time following the path without anyone ahead of me.  Plus the roads/trail wasn't blocked off from other traffic, so I had to dodge some people here and there.  Not so much fun.  There were lots of hills, and I had to walk up some of them.  Ugh.

There were plenty of water stations, and I'm so grateful for that.  50 degrees felt really hot to me after weeks of running in the low 30s.  I was so worried about overheating that I may have kept my pace a little too slow.  At mile 8 I knew I could do it.  I was so grateful to have the Garmin with me, because otherwise I might have gone a little crazy.  Without any other runners around me, I really needed a touch of reality, and the Garmin came through for me.  I knew I was going slow, but I wasn't going any slower than my training runs.  I get that this was a race, but I just wanted to finish.  I didn't have high expectations for this race -- it wasn't even chip timed!!

Close to the end of the race I passed two other women.  One was an older woman in her late 50s (oh the shame!) named Chris, and we chatted for a little while.  I was amazed to learn that she had just ran the Disney Marathon in January!  This really raised my spirits, and she told me that she has ran many marathons, but today her legs had cramped up on her.  She told me to keep on running, and so I did.  After the race, I talked to Chris for a long time.  She is such an impressive woman!!!!!  She told Mathis and I how she'd lost weight with running, survived heart problems and stayed much healthier than her friends because she runs.  She gave us some advice for Disney, and told me that I did a good job.  I confessed that I'd been sick all week, and that I felt like that had slowed me down a bit.  Chris really inspired me, and she reminded me about all the good things in running.  Meeting her was one of the redeeming qualities of this fast-paced race.

Mathis snapped a few pictures of me crossing the finish line.  I was soooooo glad to be done, and I seriously doubted how I'll ever had another 16 miles to this distance.  Or even 3 for that matter!  But we'll worry about that later!

I came in at 1 hour and 56 minutes (just under 12 minute miles).  Truth be told -- I'm proud of that time and proud of that distance.  I just couldn't believe I was so behind everyone else.  I came in third from last, and I'm just glad I didn't hold the race up for a long time.  I would have been so embarrassed if everyone else was just waiting for me to finish.

After the race I felt thirsty, but I wasn't hungry at all.  We stayed around to watch them pass out the awards and give away raffle prizes.  I told Mathis how upset I felt when I was running the race alone, and he listened emphatically (the benefits of being married to a therapist).  Mathis confessed the race was hard on him too, but he did so well coming in at 1 hour and 35 minutes!!!!  I am so proud of him!!!

Mathis began saying that he'd run next to me in future races, and I told him he wouldn't need to.  I would never ask that of him, but it was a sweet offer.  I feel confident that they'll be other runners around me in the bigger races, and now I'll just be more prepared if there aren't.

We came home from the race, showered, watched some Baylor basketball (Sic 'em Bears!) and headed out to celebrate with my friends.  We had a great dinner, and talked about how we were already feeling sore!  For this first time, I felt really sore in my abs! :)

Here we are (post-race) after dinner!  Notice that I'm wearing my race t-shirt and Baylor fleece proudly!

All in all it was a great race, and I'm proud that I did it.  Although I was close to the last, I know that there are many people who stayed at home yesterday and didn't run 10 miles.  I learned a lot through the race, and it was a great run for me.  I'm actually planning on doing another 10 miles this next weekend in order to prepare for our upcoming half.

My legs are sore today, but I plan on really stretching out and then hitting the miles again tomorrow! :)
